THE CRUCIBLE OF MAN (SOMETHING WICKED PART 2)
"History repeats itself", explains Jon Schaffer - he sees his current heavy metal sci-fi thriller as a parable about the evolution of humanity with all its faults and obvious failings, its immaturity and missed opportunities. FRAMING ARMAGEDDON (SOMETHING WICKED PART I) which caused a stir around the world last summer now continues with the grand sequel THE CRUCIBLE OF MAN (SOMETHING WICKED PART 2). Whereas in the first part of the story ICED EARTH explored a period spanning 10,000 years using gripping flashbacks, everything now focuses on the last 2000 years right up to the present.
The main character in this modern legend, Set Abominae, savior to the Setian culture and Anti-Christ to mankind, has come to take revenge on the horrors of the past and to protect everything sacred, and finally to restore Setian life on Earth. "Basically humanity has not really changed", says Jon Schaffer. "In some cases we have become a bit more clever, for example we have managed to set up the internet and have extended our knowledge of physics, chemistry and biology. But one thing has remained static: We continue to deceive ourselves while manipulating and dominating others." Is there a moral to this story then, a message, a lesson to be learned? "Yes, there is", says Schaffer, "It is all about individual honesty. In my view this alone is the key to the true evolution of mankind, and within the 'Something Wicked' storyline it is the only thing that will save mankind from extinction on Earth."
With FRAMING ARMAGEDDON (SOMETHING WICKED PART I), ICED EARTH dealt with the gripping issues of symbols, religions and leaders in a pointedly epic and progressive way. In THE CRUCIBLE OF MAN (SOMETHING WICKED PART 2) the songs get an even darker and harder edge. Schaffer: "All the material for the two albums was created at the same time giving the sound its strong continuity. But during the course of the story THE CRUCIBLE OF MAN (SOMETHING WICKED PART 2) gets focused and more compact."
To the delight of all ICED EARTH fans Jon Schaffer and singer Matt Barlow have reactivated their long-term artistic partnership on THE CRUCIBLE OF MAN (SOMETHING WICKED PART 2). "I am really pleased Matt is back," explains Schaffer. "We are spiritual brothers with a long and meaningful relationship behind us."
Barlow not only puts his voice to the multifaceted story but was also involved in writing lyrics on several tracks (´Minions Of The Watch`, The Revealing`, ´Crucify The King` and ´Something Wicked Part 3`). Schaffer: "I have a lot of respect for Matt's feel for language and his power to express himself in lyrics. I outlined the story for him and provided the necessary bullet points, and from there he contributed some great work. I am very satisfied with Matt's contribution to this album."
